About The Artwork

Made for a single pose in this photo series, the exploration into using micro cement for costumes makes this image very much about Time. What is photographically regarded as the split second of "decisiveness": the moment when the shutter opens the gate between the reality in front of the lens and what is to become it's representation (or is it really?) through digital or chemical wizardry, is here extended to weeks of preparation culminating in the creation of the image. And even if the printed photo through archival measures will last a very long time, the hardened cement is a trace of the photographic exposure (as e.g. Roland Barthes wrote about) which might linger in the world even longer. Not bad, for a product that's sold mainly for quick renovations of contemporary baths! Printed with pigment ink (Epson) by the photographer on 100% cotton paper (Hahnemühle photo rag baryta) Caementum micro II is one of twelve pictures in the series "Of the eyes he made window panes". The combination of pigment and cotton should in itself be one of the most durable media, but the surface has not been treated further, and should be kept behind UV protection for optimal longevity. The image is presented with a generous white border, and signed on the front, below the print. The print is edited in photoshop, but not a composite or a "look like a painting"-filtered image.

Finding great pleasure in the presence of the real, I try to make visual mediations that will help both myself and viewers of my art to appreciate the world we share. I live in Norway, where dark, fierce winters and luminous summer nights spans an arch over the lives of humankind in a special way. I grew up at the coast where fishermen crossed the treshold of "man's element" into the wet and fertile ocean. I currently live in one of Norway's most fertile agricultural lands: these are the terms of our existance: to sweat between dusk and dust.
