David M. Spindel Biography Born August 31, 1941, David M. Spindel grew up in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. His father was a hardworking pharmacist and his mother an ardent schoolteacher. Spindel enjoyed photography as a hobby in high school and then decided to pursue his craft more seriously at Rochester Institute of Technology. He studied with Minor White, Ralph Hattersley, Dr. Richard Zakia, and Robert Bagby, Les Stroebel and graduated in 1964. Post-graduation, he worked as an assistant for several photographers in New York City. He opened his own New York City studio in 1970. He was soon in demand by leading advertising agencies. The work poured in and his reputation grew steadily. Assignments for Major League Baseball were the catalyst for the next body of work that evolved as Spindel’s signature style. He went on to create numerous baseball posters and other products that sold worldwide and at The National Baseball Hall of Fame. He was commissioned for limited edition projects with: Joe DiMaggio, Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Duke Snider, Yogi Berra, Phil Rizzuto, and many others. His charitable work includes projects with Yogi Berra and Phil Rizzuto favorite charities. He has also photographed a variety of the icons of the entertainment field. Some of his favorite celebrities he became friends with were Kate Hepburn, Bette Davis, Chuck Connors, Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara, Eli Wallach and Anne Jackson to mention a few. Many young models (actresses) that David photographed at the beginning of his career went on to become well establish actors. To mention a few, Adriane Barbeau, Bette Midler, Gloria Hendry (the first black actress to be a James Bond woman in “Live and Let die.”) and John Witherspoon. He has been in many TV shows and movies. John Lennon and Yoko Ono hired Spindel to photograph their Double Fantasy recording session. Spindel’s photographs have been published in numerous books, and licensed for Cd's, videos, documentary films, posters, and the Why Hunger/Bermuda Tapes App. David was deeply honored when Yoko reproduced his photographs of John on a CD cover and back cover titled “JOHN LENNON ACOUSTIC.” There were also some additional photos in the booklet that accompanied this CD. Amidst his still-life work, Spindel’s developed his humorously interactive Rebus photographs, which caught the attention of American publishing companies.
