The project "XIAN - Myths of the Beauties" was inspired by the Four Great Beauties of ancient China who changed the history of the four different dynasties in ancient times: Diao Chan, Yang Guifei, Wang Zhaojun, and Xishi. These Four Great Beauties were renowned for their unparalleled beauty which they used to exercise influence over kings and warriors.

This photograph depicts the beauty of Yang Guifei (AD 713-756) whose beauty brought down a dynasty. Guifei was said to have “a face that would shame any flower.” Her loveliness was such that she is known up to the present day as one of the Four Beauties, women from ancient China legendary for their looks and the influence they exerted over emperors and kings who have fallen for their charms.

Yang Guifei was famous for the great love story with the Tang Emperor and often mentioned in ancient Chinese and Japanese literature. She was a beautiful concubine of the great last Tang emperor in China. Yang Guifei was always described as an extraordinary beauty in Chinese history. After her death, she represented as the deity of the peony. In Chinese culture, the peony represents elegant beauty, nobility, and prosperity. It is much loved by the Chinese people and is considered the national flower of China.

The muse in this photograph is Maya Murofushi, famous Japanese actress and model, Miss World Supermodel 2010 who just won the Best Actress award at the 37th International Festival of Cinema in Florence for her role in an Italian film.
