About The Artwork

"Commencement" a self-portrait photograph by Lewis Derogene aka PhenomenaLewis, published in June 2023. This self-portrait photograph was taken in her bedroom in Connecticut. In this self-portrait photograph, PhenomenaLewis is seen in a dark space, literally and metaphorically, with a little bit of light illuminating some parts of her and her cloak. This photograph was taken during a fleeting time where in the midst of her hopelessness, she felt that maybe she could change something in her life to uplift her. Hince the commencement of this new fighting spirit that only lasted for so long. In PhenomenaLewis' Commencement self-portrait photograph, she is wearing a soft pink satin fabric covering her head as she faces one side showing her side profile as she stares upwards. Commencement is a temporary feeling for me. When I was photographing myself for this piece, I was trying to get into the mindset of a renaissance painter's muse. I pinned my black fabric on my bedroom ceiling to stand as my backdrop and covered myself in a pink satin cloth. It was nighttime when I took this shot, so I turned off all my lights and only lit one bulb and placed it right above my head and off to the distance. I can't recall exactly how I felt in the moment, but I knew that for the past days I was feeling hopeless. So many things going wrong in my life and I had no strength and no power to even change them, not even a little bit. So, I decided it's been a while since I did a self-portrait, let me photograph myself to see if I can motivate creativity, motivate problem solving. It was temporary, but I felt that I could start a change in my life. It was fleeting, but I captured the moment with this photograph.
