About The Artwork

This Dutch Elm tree in the Hutchings Meadow (now Cook's Meadow) was planted in the the 1870's by James Mason Hutchings in the meadow that he owned at the base of Yosemite Falls. This tree is now over 150 years old. It is a survivor of the dutch elm disease, floods and changes in Yosemite Valley in the way meadows are tended. It has a special historic and romantic quality and is very beautiful in all seasons. Here it is captured buried in the deep snow of the winter of 2023. A survivor of 36 atmospheric rivers that impacted the mountains of central California and waiting for spring so it can come alive in glorious splendor from its winter sleep.

I work in Yosemite National Park as a tour guide. I have worked in Yosemite for over 30 years. My artwork is inextricably tied to my Yosemite Geography and my ecological message. I am a plein air painter, print maker, and photographer. I also write and illustrate my own books. I am the author of "A Brief Instruction in Christian Religion," (A translation of Faustus Socinus), "The Chronicles of the Field Mouse Timothy," (Corn,Tomato,Wheat, Cotton, Sweet Potatoes, Rice Paddy, Pond Mouse and Yosemite), "Nature Vision" (Poems), and I have illustrated the short stories of my late daughter Sandra Fontana "Cereal at Midnight." I love nature and the wilderness. I am a proponent of the global national parks movement.
