This matriarch was leader of a herd of elephant that made Mara North their home for most of the month that I was there. Following the lead of this large female, they all had a very assured and calm demeanour. Although occasionally getting inquisitive, and coming for a closer look, she was completely unphased by my presence. Although always keeping half an eye on her calf (pictured in the background of this photo), and regularly coming together to share a moment, she was also happy to let her wander off as they wandered the Elicharro Plains. This is no doubt an area that they will spend a lifetime returning to together. By highlighting these personal stories, showing animals to be emotional individuals rather than just an anonymous statistic in a wider population, Matthew hopes to promote a desire to protect and care for this precious wildlife.
