The sea, the sand and the chance created ephemeral works of art that had to be captured rapidly, as the images faded away in seconds and they would never repeat. I captured those magical moments and now the photographs are printed and mounted on Plexiglas.

Text by the art critic Adelinda Allegretti: "The over 20 photos on show at CAM Casoria Contemporary Art Museum constitute a group of core works, which I dare define “the first choice”, part of a wider cycle – in actual fact approximately a thousand snapshots – brought together under the title of “Epifania” (“Epiphany”). The result of a work carried out along a New Zealand beach, the photos of this cycle are clearly brimming with movement, but above all they are clear evidence of divine immanence and of its manifestation. MASTUSET himself describes with great humility and clarity of thought the arrangement of sand into images worth of an abstract painting. They’re vibrating with energy but, at the same time, they’re structurally sound, harmonious, able to evoke the perfection of creation, its infinite wealth of possibilities, of transformations, seemingly random and chaotic yet so imbued with meaning as to let one infer their divine design. I like to define them as a rip in the fabric of Truth; it is however a rip lasting an instant, only just the time to sense one is snooping through a door left barely ajar onto “another” world. For their own very nature, the fascinating images resulting from this process are ephemeral and destined to vanish as swiftly as they revealed themselves. It is the immanence I mentioned, or rather the awareness that all that surrounds us, including ourselves, is part of a divine will, or else a cosmic intelligence, manifesting itself in a perpetual, incessant becoming, surely only before the eyes of those who can see. And so the sand, but also the sea and the breeze, help to shape the work. Is it all? Surely not, as, should the action of the Catalan artist be confined to pursuing with patience and blind faith the opening and sudden closing of that door onto the infinite, we would only get purely “mechanical” works. In these pieces, instead, his action aims to help, to enhance the movement of the sand, driving it towards a shape that is clearly not figurative but surely able to better express that idea of perfection, harmony and balance inbuilt in the Creation itself. Each of them is as different and unique as the movement that generated it: therefore, just like a painting, it is an original piece, unable to be multiplied or reproduced as the medium would allow. In this cycle of works by MASTUSET I see much more than mere lyricism.
