ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Inspiration….... I can’t say any one person or thing inspires me except David Attenborough! But what I love investigating is Surrealist, Futurist, and Abstract art. I have always strived to create a point of difference in my photographic artwork where I make the viewer stop and consider it. To engage someone longer than the obligatory two-second glance in a world where we consume enormous amounts of imagery every day is quite difficult. The process that I use is one I began to develop back in 2011 and have been refining ever since. It is a reductive process that begins with a foundation photo, where the main subject is isolated using a set of rules that deconstruct it into many base layers. Personal aesthetics continue the process by using multiple copies of the base layers, at the same time incorporating contemporary post-processing methods. It is only through this method that a new image emerges that is not predetermined. Based upon its own content, the image belongs not within the limited borders of traditional photography but that of “DeConstructed Photography”. The result is an undetermined image based only on its original data that is bright, colourful, kaleidoscopic, and Rorschach in nature.

I am a Melbourne artist who lives and breathes unconventional abstract photography with a BA in fine art photography, graduating in 2010 with distinction. With a background in science and ceramics and a hands-on approach, my art practice experiments with the compositional elements in a single photographic image through digital deconstruction and the deliberate physical disruption of the print surface, through cutting and folding techniques. Because of the evolutionary nature of the experimental process, 3D sculptural pieces are now emerging as part of the practice. I have regularly exhibited for over 15 years in group and solo shows and have been a finalist in many Australian art awards, winning the Inaugural Noel Counihan award in 2017. I established and curated a community photography group for eight years before opening my studio as a fine art printing service in 2017, which allows other artists direct access to a large format printer. Like most artists, I have multiple interests which include being a freelance photographer, a tutor in Photoshop and photography, and a fine art printer.
