About The Artwork

The Escadrille series is one of several variations on photographing objects that are lit with colored lights. I arrived at this series when trying to reference the vocabulary of abstract painting while strictly utilizing the mechanics of photography. Photographing paper airplanes allows me to fully explore geometric abstraction as a compositional motif. My hope is that the bright colors draw the viewer into the piece and then takes them on a satisfying emotional journey as they explore the lines and shapes and try to identify the subject.

Squid studied at Pratt Institute and holds a dual masters degree in Photography and Art History. His New York artist experience has been a non-stop adventure. His natural love for bright colors was electrified working with Blue Man Group as they opened their New York show, doing everything from backstage tech to sound operation. Then he shifted into video and began working at Video D Studios with Dennis Diamond. It was here that he was introduced to the amazing world of dance and art video. His many Video D adventures included assisting in the video recording, editing and/or theatrical installation design for amazing artists like Bill Irwin, Elizabeth Streb, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Richard Serra, and Bruce Nauman. These days he can be found working with many parts of the New York performance community doing video design and creative technical support. His personal photographic explorations include experiments with colored lights and paper bags that have expanded to include paper airplanes and other sundry paper objects.
