About The Artwork

Commentary According to tradition, the Gens Iulia (namely that which Julius Caesar belonged to) directly descended from Venus, Goddess of Love. When Cleopatra was in Rome around 50 BC, she was a lover of Caesar and had a son by him. Caesar carved a statue for Cleopatra, making her depicted as a young Venus, the beautiful "Esquiline Venus", which is now in Rome at the Capitoline Museums. Platinotype The characteristics of platinotype make it one of the best printing processes for the richness of tone and for its stability. Patented in London in 1873, it quickly spread in the photo print art due to its unique features. It is a completely manual technique and each copy can be considered an original. Paper: Fabriano Roma Vergata (A rarity, out of production)

Lorenzo Scaramella is an artist who knows how to create substance out of the shadows. His photographs, printed using refined ancient techniques, give off an aura full of charm that reminds us of the history of this means of documentation and expression. He prints his photos with a variety of techniques now hidden because they were developed in the nineteenth century and later abandoned as not suitable for mass production. So he gives us the pleasure of seeing the expressive nuances that can be obtained for example with the press on salted paper, platinum, gum and gelatin-silver. With the eye of a master together with his multi-purpose technical hands, Lorenzo Scaramella creates unexpected and memorable aesthetic effects.
