About The Artwork

Derived from photographic capture, the image is created with powdered and metallic pigments using a technique originally developed in the mid-19th Century. Each tone is deposited as a contact exposure, with a handmade single-shot emulsion of pigment, sensitizer, and gum arabic. The freshly developed gum layer is extremely fragile, lending itself to variable subtractive manipulation. That fragility aligns with the evanescent nature of the floral bouquet subject matter and the delicate pigments it's rendered with. Once hard and dry, another emulsion layer can be applied. This image is made up of almost a dozen discrete layers. It's a lengthy process, but one that yields a unique image of incredible depth. The work is printed on Fabriano Artistico extra white hot press 640gsm paper. I tear a full sheet in half to work at 15x22in, preserving the paper's deckle edge. The paper lays almost completely flat. It's neither framed nor matted. I don't mask the edges when coating with emulsion, so the edges have visible brush strokes that lend themselves to hinged matte mounting and shadowbox framing.

A native of California now living and working in Oakland, Scott Frankel works in a variety of media ranging from oils and watercolors to generative digital synthesis and alternative photographic processes. A former fine arts filmmaker with a career pursued in film, Scott is a member of both the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Association for Computing Machinery. The most pronounced unifying thread in his work is the pursuit of processes that are largely uncontrollable. Wet on wet watercolors run where they will; gum bichromate prints attain lustrous depth after a dozen or more layers; long exposure pinhole cameras capture what they please; and generative 3D processes take days of processing to reveal their uncanny, synthetic imagery. Each forces a dialogue that demands focused attention, the process requiring process to steer. Scott's work has been collected both privately and by corporations, with a 12 piece commission recently completed for a national financial institution.
