This image is part of my first series of Fractured Flora images. It was created for the launch of The Planthunter, an online magazine which aims to celebrate plants and the varied ways humans interact with them. Magnolia I is the first in a pair of before and after flatlay images intended to be displayed as a diptych. I use liquid nitrogen to cryo freeze the and then shatter each floral specimen. In this series I was to was trying to convey that I was working with real flowers and that there was no digital manipulation involved, that I had transformed soft, delicate things into something capable of shattering at a touch. The images in this series are soft pastel tones which remind me of vintage china tea sets.

I am a botanical alchemist. I use liquid nitrogen to transmute botanicals from soft biological things into something momentarily fragile beyond even the most delicate porcelain. I then gleefully smash or fracture these specimens and photograph the results – quickly before they disintegrate into oxidised mush.
