ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Phillip Coory's 'GELLIBRAND HILL AND SURROUNDS' series of artworks were inspired by the Australian landscape surrounding him, particularly the Gellibrand Hill near his home of Melbourne. He seeks to capture the beauty of nature in an abstract and unique way, taking cues from A.I.-based techniques to create art that is as modern as it is traditional and thoughtful. He hopes that viewers will appreciate the intricacies of the environment around us, and to be inspired by the success of human-machine partnership to create captivating artwork. In terms of his chosen medium, subject matter and style, he has looked to combine traditional elements of photography and art with modern AI-influenced styles to create a truly distinct piece of art. The use of exaggerated brush strokes and captivating colours create an expressionist oil painting-like result and the soft, dreamy atmosphere of the Gellibrand Hill and its various features, including ancient aloes and granite outcrops, along with dramatic cloud formations are all captured perfectly in this unique and captivating series.

Phillip is a visual artist who was born and raised in Melbourne, Australia. He has always had an inclination towards creative activities and making art. While still at school he took up photography and over the years has honed his skills in the ways of light, subject, and composition and color. Over time Phillip’s drive and obsessive passion for taking pictures steered his photography in the direction of abstract, non-representational imagery, and much like the abstract expressionist artists, of whom he is so fond, has sought to ‘break away from traditional forms of representation and to create a new, more personal and emotional form of art’. Over time, what Phillip calls his, ‘abstract photographic art’, which he creates by combining manipulated colors, contrasts, and situations has begun to incorporate the use of AI-inspired algorithms. This technology is being used to cross-pollinate ideas and styles, variously creating completely new and extraordinary images as a result, the new artworks combining the immediacy of the act of taking the photograph with a style and tradition of another time and place.  Phillip’s work has been praised for its ability to capture the beauty and nuances of the everyday world, and his technical skill and ability to create powerful, emotive images is well regarded. Phillip continues to push the boundaries of his art, constantly experimenting and exploring new methods to create captivating images. As an artist, the use of AI to create the artwork adds a certain level of complexity to the work, giving it a futuristic edge. The intriguing combination of photography and AI gives the pieces a dream-like quality, making them almost otherworldly. Phillip's art allows the viewer to explore different perspectives and interpretations, creating a truly immersive viewing experience. His abstract art serves as a reminder that technology can be a powerful tool in creating works of art that are both captivating and thought-provoking.
