By early January, the bay begins to freeze over. It soon becomes solid enough to support the weight of a vehicle. Throughout the winter, strong winds whip the surface snow into a sculpted blanket of mounds and crevices. The Bruce Peninsula in southwest Ontario separates Lake Huron from Georgian Bay. Its Huron shore is gentle and sandy; the Georgian Bay coast rocky and edged with the stark limestone faces of the Niagara Escarpment. Cliffs plunge 150 feet to the crystal clear water below. The immensity of Georgian Bay, with its vast horizons and infinitely changeable weather, is reminiscent of the ocean. Many islands rise from the Bay, and its beaches are strewn with immense rocks. The Peninsula is a sparsely settled region of forests, bogs, farmland and spectacular shoreline. It is home to rare ferns and orchids, varied fauna, a major flyway for migrating birds—and landscapes of great beauty. The landscapes in this series were photographed between 1974 and 2017, in and around the Cape Croker Indian Reserve. They were digitally reprocessed in 2017-2018. Fine Art 100% cotton acid-free matte photo paper. 310 gram weight. Numbered and signed by the artist on the back. Printed with 2” white border. Shipped in heavy duty mailing tube.
