A collection of underwater nudes photographed between Sydney and The Solomon Islands. In ancient Greek mythology, the supernatural sea nymphs, referred to as Nereids (ne-reeds), were believed to inhabit the oceans and represent everything that is beautiful about the sea. "Galene” (Gah-leen), was the personification of the calm sea. Printed on Archival Cotton Smooth Art and delivered in a postal tube ready for framing. Framing also available through my gallery. Joel Coleman photographs the sea and beyond. Starting at age 14, Joel was photographing sports carnivals for his school magazine and, by age 17, he was photographing professionally around school hours and spending his remaining free time in the darkroom. Working as a dive instructor in his 20’s allowed him to experiment and later master underwater photography. Joel built his life and reputation on the art of capturing moments of exquisite beauty and timeless emotion in the world around him. His award-winning photography has taken him across oceans and continents as he continues to push the boundaries of his craft; dedicating himself to achieving levels of technical mastery enjoyed by few and striving to tell visual stories in a unique and powerful way. From photographing nature’s most elusive species at the ocean floor to documenting human interaction with the landscape through both aerial and underwater photography, Joel’s approach stays true to his soul; that of an artist, conservationist, waterman, mentor and adventurer. “I travel to as many places as I can on this earth, I am fascinated by the natural world and want nothing more than to spend my time photographing it. The creative concept work that I produce is dreamt up. We all have dreams, I simply sketch mine out then re-build them using available tools, props, lights and people. I then rely on the technical knowledge that I have spent my life perfecting and create the best possible photographs. Call me an artist, call me a storyteller, call me an adventure photographer, call me whatever you want. I call myself a person willing to spend time learning. And when the opportunity presents itself, I put that knowledge to use. I believe that patience and persistence pay off and, when the all the elements align, I’ll get the shot.” Through photography I pursue creative adventures that self perpetuate, challenge and inspire while providing people with an emotional connection to a time or place, be it real or imagined.
