'Harmony', from ‘Underwater Sculpture’ series by Maya Almeida. The Underwater Sculpture’ series is part of a personal project captured in the ocean. The series was shot underwater at the end of day to evoke wonder and magic using silk fabric originally from India. The shoot involved negotiating with local Egyptian authorities to gain access to the right part of the ocean. Captured on the night of the Strawberry Full Moon in early June with natural light in the Southern Red Sea. Light and water were particularly harmonious. After a few days trying to work the fabric around models, I realised that once the human element was removed, and the fabric sculpted using feet, hands and natural water motion, images took on a life of their own with light behaving the way it only does in water. A limited edition of 15 pieces available, 70 x 70cm. (approx 27.5 x 27.5 inches) Printed direct onto the highest quality Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Metallic 340gsm which is museum grade archival paper with a 10cm white border. Comes with signed certificate of authenticity, and a label signed by artist with name of artist, piece and edition number, which can be affixed to back when framed. Certified for 100+ years.

Maya Almeida Araujo has exhibited globally and had sites structurally adapted for her pieces. She is a multidisciplinary visual artist whose practice considers art as a platform for connection. With a focus on the element of water, the work floats between the spheres of still and moving images, artistic installation, and site specific work. Navigating the confluence of nature, art and technology, her work has developed through critical engagement with her own mind and body in a way that examines fundamental questions of how human beings relate to themselves and to their environment. Adopting a unique approach to each work, Maya draws on personal experience, culture and ancient philosophy to create visceral immersive experiences. An invitation to step into an imaginary world in a way that is both sensorial and profoundly intimate. It asks how we can come together and ultimately, heal. London is home but Maya was born in Lisbon to Portuguese/Belgian/German parents. She studied Biology at Imperial College, London. Her artistic path was one of auto-didacticism with training at Central Saint Martins, with best in class equipment manufacturers and under some of the greatest image makers such as Tim Flach and Lois Greenfield. The work consistently pushes technological boundaries in search for a truer realisation of the intended experience. Recent projects have involved developing custom rigs for film-making in the open ocean, multi-screen editing at ground breaking levels of resolution, colour depth, motion, interactive animation environments and producing hyper-textured ambisonic soundscapes. All in partnership with a collective of like-minded artistic collaborators and craftspeople without losing sight of her truth.
