I swam across the sky to find you from the series 'The sublime light' 2016-2017 Pigment print on fine art cotton rag paper & 23.5 carat gold leaf Image size 30 x 30cm Framed size 43 x 43cm Unique edition 3/3 This hand-gilded photograph is framed in a white box frame with white mat board, museum quality anti-reflective anti-UV glass and d-ring for hanging. This image was inspired by two voyages to Greece and Turkey where my aim was to experience and record the quality of light and atmospheric phenomena in the region. These two voyages coincided with research I undertook into the symbolic use of gold and complex visual space of Byzantine icons. Each image in the series “The sublime light” tells a different story of my journey, and each one is hand-gilded, or hand-finished with a gold-leaf design in post-production - some inspired by my journey, and others by icons themselves. While this is a still image, its appearance and meaning change depending on the direction of the light, and the position of the audience. I recommend hanging the works where they will catch the light of a window that is either at their left or right side. This will allow you to experience the changing nature of the work as you move through the room.
