ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I’m sharing my experience with thalassophobia, an irrational fear of the sea. As a child, I loved the ocean, thanks to Disney's *The Little Mermaid*, and spent summers at the beach. But everything changed when I stumbled upon the shark movie *Deep Blue Sea*. That scene with the shark’s open mouth terrified me. Then, a video game featuring a creature called the "Portuguese shark" made things worse. From that point on, I avoided anything related to the ocean for years. It’s funny because before all this, I even had a pet fish named López, who sadly died from overfeeding. Over time, my fear shifted towards the deep sea and the creatures living there. One example is the anglerfish, with its built-in lantern. It’s ingenious but terrifying at the same time—like an evolutionary mistake. A few days ago, I decided to face my fear and went back to the beach. I even went into the sea, submerged myself, and waited before coming up for air, just to see if I could do it. I like testing myself like that sometimes. I won’t be going scuba diving anytime soon, but this small step made me feel stronger. It showed me that I can choose when to confront my fears and even enjoy the ocean again. For me, there’s nothing more empowering than that.
