About The Artwork

The Nishika N8000 is a 35mm four-lens 3D camera that originally sold for US$200 in 1989. If you wanted to buy such a camera, you wouldn't be able to find it in a shop. One of the only ways to get one was to call the number given in the ad you found in a photography magazine. The company that released this camera has done its best to make the N8000 seem like the next step in photographic evolution. While it's a pretty unique concept, it was far from a refined product. In its heyday, this camera was advertised as a 3D camera using conventional 35mm film. For stereo photos, it took four shots at a time with four separate lenses. You mailed the film to the company's lab and got cool lenticular prints. If you've ever seen a limited edition film on VHS, DVD or blu-ray with a 3D effect on the cover, you know what lenticular printing is. Long after Nishika Ltd. went out of business, these four-lens gimmicks started popping up on eBay for as much as $500. You might be asking how we can see these 3D images now that we can't mail in film for special prints. The answer is simple: with photoshop and GIF animations. You scan four images, slice them into individual slices, choose a focus point and convert them into an animated GIF using Photoshop's timeline function. By the end of 1989, over 100,000 cameras had been sold, but the printed stereo photos were beginning to fade within months. Nishika, not knowing what was wrong, mailed reprints after numerous complaints, but by 1990 significant damage had been done and sales were down. Several major companies affected by the print fiasco, as well as some independent distributors, sued Nishika Ltd. for breach of "express and implied warranties". The problem, it turned out, was that the emulsion was incompatible with the substrate, causing the images to fade. Lenticular print size: 75 x 60 cm
