One of my favorites is to photograph late at night, alone, capturing the deep darkness changed only by the available light. This often requires long exposures. This image was captured on 6x6 black and white film with a Hasselblad camera from the 1960s. The work will be approximately 24x24 inches and will be printed in a very high quality paper, ideal for capturing the deep blacks of this photograph. The work will be matted on high quality, gallery quality matting and signed by the photographer on the right side of the matting, along with the series number and limited series total (10).

I started photography in the 80’s, learning from my father, an architect. I carried his heavy Nikon around, learned the technical principles and the fundamentals of perspectives and compositions. I returned to photography in the 2000’s, now as a practicing physician. At first, photography and art may seem contradictory or even a diversion from a demanding profession. That misses a great commonality between the two: medicine and photography are both arts informed by science and technology. A knowledgeable and competent physician can miss the greater picture of understanding the person behind the patient as easily as a photographer with in-depth understanding of techniques can miss the moment or the composition. In candor, mastering both arts are the quest of a whole life. All photographers seek to capture the essence of a location, of a subject, of a moment. Physicians chasing an elusive diagnosis look for what has not yet been noted, the combination of objective and subjective nuances that, alone, are meaningless but, as a whole, reveal the truth. When photographing I too seek the unseen, the overlooked moments that thousands walk past every day.
