Photography: Color on Paper. Carmen Michelena imaginatively invents the past and represents the present. In his work the past is not linear. She fosters the mediation of the old, in objects and architectures, through the new, issues of current life, reviving a reading that contemporary photography has overlooked. Today, the old and the traditional are not only not compatible with innovation but, in fact, it indicates that this vision is necessary to create the current. In his new digital collages, it does not imply a complete rejection of the past, it is included. Rather the contrary, it uses the past and the traditional styles of the environments, of the house (especially kitsch and baroque), with its multiple points of view, which is usually associated with others. Furthermore, it combines its nineteenth-century spaces with characters from the past, and a fantastic zoology with the current strategies of irony and mockery, and with astonishment and humor it lashes out at general conceptions of its own culture and history. Powerful combinations are those that have the power to expand the limits of any standardized possibility of representation, as well as the narrow scope of our perception. As she herself writes: "facts that are in the eyes of those who come ... what my eyes see, or what I imagine they can see Sus collages nos invitan a adentrarnos en su “locura visual” barroca y surreal; una puesta en escena, que produce una irresistible sensación de desorientación por el hecho mismo del obligado desplazamiento del ver, entre el aquí y allá, abajo y arriba, para demostrarnos que se pueden narrar acontecimientos de una manera que hace borrosa la frontera entre lo real y lo ficticio

Born in Madrid (Spain), living in Caracas (Venezuela) I believe in freedom, although I'm not sure how to exercise it. I don't believe in purity, as Nicolas Guillen said. I like the visual adventure, but above the existential. I think the facts are in the eyes of those who see them, so I chose photography to share what my eyes see, or what they imagine they can see, but mostly to share what I'd like to change.
