About The Artwork

This beautiful image of three young men running nude on a rooftop in Havana, Cuba and was taken in 1997 during the artist's first trip back since he had left 29 years earlier. This is part of a series entitled, Los Chicos de la Azotea and is a Limited Edition, Gelatin Silver print which is HAND PRINTED from the original negative on archival gallery fiber paper. This image is number 1 in an edition of 6 (plus two artist proofs). The photo is signed, dated, numbered and titled on the verso by the artist. This is a wonderful addition to collectors of fine art male nudes.  Artist statement on this series: “Once while photographing Madonna on a night of an Oscar awards ceremony, she asked me if I had been back to Cuba. I said I hadn’t and she responded, “you should go back and photograph where you were born”. A week later, Cuban artist Guido Llinás visited my apartment in Greenwich Village and said, “I can’t believe you and your apartment are so Cuban and you haven’t gone back to photograph”. I figured this was some sort of sign to hear this within one week of each other. These two individuals were the impetus for the return to my roots and birthplace and to see that magical island, a place I heard about from my parents as I was growing up. The images from this trip capture a specific time in the history of Cuba and is a documentation of my adventures in Havana. Male nudes are an integral part of my photographic work. Traveling to Cuba with my husband and collaborator, Tico Torres, we knew we wanted to photograph and capture the beauty and grace of Cuban men. We spent an afternoon with these three beautiful guys on a rooftop overlooking Havana. As the sun was setting, the light was rich, golden and glorious.” Images from Los Chicos de la Azotea series have been exhibited at the Lehigh University Art Galleries (2005) in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania for an exhibition entitled, Viajeros, North American Artists/Photographers' Images of Cuba, at the Biblioteca Nacional for the IX Havana Bienale (2006) in an exhibit entitled, La Habana, la ciudad y la fotografía and at the Leslie Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art in New York City (2010) in an exhibition entitled, The Great LGBT Photo Show.
