About The Artwork

For the past three years, the coronavirus has become part of our daily reality and has left its metaphysical mark. However, I believe that there is a silver lining due to the imposed social isolation. It has created an opportunity for humanity to forge a deeper connection within itself. The times I spent on my own have been some of my most productive stints. With fewer distractions, I could focus on existentialising moments. On one such occasion, I went for a walk with my camera. I wanted to experiment by taking photographs without looking through the viewfinder. The intent behind the action was to record what it looks like when we feel we have lost control. The figures in the artworks are a composite of my shadows. Note how they grow incrementally, indicative of the potential for personal growth in time spent alone. The experiment led to the inspiration for "Mostly Alone but Not Always Lonely I & Il." Blue, being the predominant color, indicates bravery and dedication. It also represents introspective journeys and symbolises wisdom and depth of understanding.

I was born and raised in Vanderbijlpark, a small town in the Gauteng Provence of South Africa, in 1969. It's a heavily industrialised area where the sky is pale, grey, or brown. Not knowing what I wanted to do with my life, a friend suggested I further my education in photography. It was then that I found an outlet to the pressing need for expression, without the misunderstood external gesticulations that limit the souls' expression. The purpose behind my work is to share what I have learned, i.e. with every experience, the good and the bad, life loves, teaches, incubates, protects, nurtures, and sets us free to live and prosper if we so choose. At the age of 48, I left my hometown and moved to Cape Town, South Africa, where I currently reside, and the sky is always blue.
