About The Artwork

As a photographer I'm interested in the simplicity of our daily lives. During the second lockdown in The Netherlands, called ‘De nieuwe gedeeltelijke lockdown’ (translated as ‘the new partially lockdown’) I created a new serie of works around my daily live in lockdown. This time (compared to the first lockdown) I felt a kind of locked up in our house, which translated in these cropped photos who are intentionally quite ‘tight’ compared to my other work. This image is made on day 16 of the lockdown, on October 29 of 2020. It shows an old winter cherry from my grandmother (who passed away years ago) which I still keep in my apartment. The close-up framing and use of blurriness lends an unsettling and destabilising aspect to the photo. It’s about keeping personal things up and close in a rather strange time. The artwork is printed on Hahnemühle German Etching paper here in Amsterdam. The paper gives a painterly/watercolour vibe to the photo. The work comes with an aluminium white frame. This photo is 30x40 cm and comes in an edition of 6. This is 2/6. Artwork certified, numbered and signed by the artist.

Merette Uiterwaal (b. 1990, The Netherlands) is a photographer interested in the simplicity of everyday life. Due to her colour blindness, Uiterwaal views the world in an unusual way. Her abstract portraits investigate the dynamics of the landscapes of our surroundings. The resulting, surreal images are open for the viewer's interpretation and understanding. Photography platform GUP New selected her as one of the New Dutch Photography Talents for 2021. She is currently living and working in Zaandam, The Netherlands.
