Night Fire in Sequoia Grove Photograph - Limited Edition of 100

This fire was a controlled burn, intentionally started by the Park Service in the Mariposa grove of Sequoia trees.. Such burns create bare soil for new seedlings to get a good start. The tiny Sequoia seed has only enough stored energy inside to produce a very short root which could not penetrate a forest floor covered in needles and leaves. The bark on the Sequoia trees is almost fire-proof, so the fire does not usually do much damage to a mature tree, while thinning out the forest of small trees and plants. I spent the night wandering around in this fire with my camera and tripod.
