ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In street photography, it is the randomness, the momentary that decides, cementing Henri Cartier-Bresson's theory of the decisive moment when the photographer's eye is able to perceive the composition in space and freeze that unique moment when he intuitively presses the shutter. My eye, in the seemingly banal entry into an underground parking lot, discerned the play of light and dark, the relationship between sharp and out-of-focus, the interpenetration of images, their equivalence that brings out the essence of the image when "beneath one exposed image is another, [...] and beneath it again another, [...] until the faithful image of reality, the absolute, the mystery that no one will ever see, or perhaps even deeper: the decay of all image, of all reality." (Robert Eberwein). As in many of my other works in the neo-noire photography series, here I am in dialogue with the modernist aesthetic of cinema noire and its dark atmosphere, as well as with the master of 20th century street photography Saul Leiter. Cf. with my photographs: Red Bar #85, Yellow Bar #5, Night Bar #5, Street, Emergency Exit/Hommage a Saul Leiter.
