About The Artwork

See below for promotion from the artist - 9.25" x 13.5" image on 11"x14" Iflord fibre based paper. Traditional darkroom print. $145.00usd + shipping Contact curator@saatchiart.com to make an offer or discounts The Palms of Los Angeles have always fascinated me. I've spent many hours watching them bend and sway in the Santa Ana winds before I realized that I was studying them. Their survival in a dense city, towering over the city almost like its protector. My original passion is to print film shot images in a traditional darkroom. It is inspiring viewing an image through the enlarger lens in the dark with only the warmth of a red safe light, then seeing it come alive in the chemical trays. So it is no surprise that I began the palm series shooting film and eagerly and selfishly isolating myself in the comfort of my darkroom. As I look through my darkroom work portfolio, I recognize how each print has it's individuality. A slight shift of the paper or a chemical stain from the thongs makes each print unique. I processed only a limited edition of my handprinted work and selfishly I now hide away one edition of each image for future generations who I know will be curious to see the results of the progression of the photographic image. As darkrooms become lightrooms, these photographs will remain as historical evidence not just for the image but of the qualities of the photographic print and process. There is something magical and enlightening of seeing an image on silver gelatin photographic paper. The richness of the black, purity of the white and all the streams of greys in between cannot be substituted, at least not yet. One of the originals shot in early 2010(or late 2009) with Kodak 400iso film and printed on fibre based Ilford mat paper. 2 editions printed. I edition for sale and I will remain with me. **Thank you gift from me, the artist, with a purchase of any available original limited edition photograph from my portfolio. You will receive, complimentary, one of my black&white silver gelatin darkroom processed photograph. The comp print will be one of my artist's copy and not necessarily seen in my portfolio.**

"Digital or Film the Lens is my brush" I especially enjoy layering and building a narrative with several photographs from my portfolio. I select, merge and play with the subjects to achieve a final impression where reality cannot. I choose elements to better describe the visual rather than insist on using the lens captured reality of that moment. Armenian Origin, grew up in Montreal, I am now a Vancouver based photographer and visual artist. My work is diverse in imagery and technique, working with both digital and analogue. With the Palm series, I wanted to create a series that's suspended in time and that described the feelings of adventures, of peaceful places and of a time when anything was possible. The brightly coloured dreamscapes are romantic, whimsical and calming. The improbable sky is emphasized in the minimalist landscape to highlight the duality of the cluttered urban chaos and the serene meditative landscape. Since shutting down my private darkroom, only select analogue B/W images are available. (handprinted on silver gelatin paper) "Rita Minichiello’s recent photography exhibit in Vancouver was like coming across a beautiful warm oasis. Love her sense of whimsical juxtaposition of familiar images against the playful bright green skies. As a fan of collage in both paintings as well as photography, these works are inspiring." DM
