About The Artwork

The most beautiful of beach scenes where pink clouds and light blue water is filled with a pearlescent shimmer as the water laps softly on the sand. This image was made on a small beach called Dingieshowe which lies at the join between the parishes of St Andrews and Deerness on Orkney. The beach is one side of a double sided beach with dunes in the middle and looks out towards the Scottish mainland. Very early on a clear morning in September, I walked up over the sandy wooden steps and through the dunes to a scene that took my breath away. The water here is so pure and clean and the sand so gold and silvery, that it is hard to take your eyes from it. This is the place takes away all worries and cares and refills your soul with happiness and something beautiful. I found these wonderful lines by Irish poet Thomas Moore (1779 - 1852) And precious the tear as that rain from the sky, Which turns into pearls as it falls in the sea. Themes: Beach, summer, water, sand, sea, calm, peace, Colours: aquamarine, light blue, sand, beige, white, pink Printed on beautifully fine art paper that is guaranteed not to fade for over a hundred years. Print size 80 x 44 inches including a 1 inch white border for handling. Also available as a canvas print on request. My work is all about the emotional connection we have to a place and the moment in our memory when we felt such intense pleasure looking at a landscape. I am driven to capture the essence of a place with my camera, working mainly with the colours and shapes I see when I half close my eyes. I travel to remote islands, to places steeped in history, unspoilt beaches and wild rocky coastlines where I love to work in quiet solitude. FRAMING This item is too large to ship framed but my suggestion would be to have this paper dry mounted and float framed with a simple light coloured wood frame for strength. It is an great size for over the sofa or above the bed in a room with a high ceiling.

As a professional photographer I travel often to the islands of northern Scotland to make my images in places that provoke a profound emotional reaction. The colours, the textures, the wildness of the places and the history are all intertwined in a fascinating, and often bewildering melting pot of sensation that forces me to make art. After moving many times to get to where I should be, I now live on top of a cliff at the northern end of the Isle of Skye. Skye is a large and very beautiful island in the far north of Scotland; a place of inspiration, myth and legend. The beauty of the landscape draws artists and walkers, photographers and lovers of Nature like a magnet, and I am likewise smitten. Skye has a ruggedness and intense green hills that would make anyone pick up a camera or a paintbrush. My work has moved through variations on a theme of movement and colour. Whether the camera moves or I move or the landscape moves it is all the same. Colours, moving blending and soaking into one another create a sense of playfulness, the feeling you get when the wind is in your hair on a bright sunny day. More and more I wonder if there is any end to how one can capture the colours, the lines and the essence of a place. In my studio today, the bright green Hill of the Red Fox is shrouded in a light mist, the wind is howling and the clouds are moving quickly across the hills. It is a scene that makes my heart sing. I hope my work conveys some of the joy I feel when I see these colours, the harmony and the wind singing through it all. It is at least a quest that, hopefully, will last a lifetime.
