Psychologist Elizabeth Loftus has shown that false memories and deeply held childhood memories are sometimes entirely manufactured, with no basis in verifiable events. This raises the question of whether authentic memory truly exists. The process of accessing memories is inherently constructive, as the mind recreates experiences in the moment of recollection. This prompts consideration of the extent to which our memories can be said to reflect objective truth. The act of creating the images in this series parallels the internal experience of reconciling empirical reality with memory—a psychic collision with a present in which the past no longer exists. The images are an emergent result of this process. The themes of objective observation versus subjective interpretation and the strange relationship between constructive imagination, memory, and truth, are central to this work. ••• This series began with a return to places of distant memory from my own childhood, chosen for having never been revisited prior to photographing. I recorded each scene as a digitally stitched panorama then, transferred then onto medium format celluloid as black and white negatives before transferring the images to mixed media fragments treated with silver nitrate in the darkroom. These I collaged to physically rebuild each landscape of memory, creating a new interpretation of the past. The completed reconstructions were then photographed again and placed back into the original scenes as digital composites. • • • C-Type colour print on Fujicolor Crystal Archive Matte.
