ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Recurring Dreams III is a series of portraits featuring Kitso Walebowa as part of a dream. The light on the different parts of his body expresses one's connection to and control over one's own mind, soul and voice; the light has been placed on the head, the chest and neck in different pictures to signify that. The project aims to make its subject look like part of a dream. a dream about self discovery, a dream that sees the physical body take different forms and express itself freely.

Giancarlo Diablo LaGuerta is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist and curator, born and raised in Gaborone, Botswana. His work attempts to destigmatize conversations around politics, masculinity, culture and heritage in the context of Botswana and Southern Africa. Giancarlo’s approach to making work is experimental and many of his works blur the line between representative and abstract. This is the case across the many mediums he uses which include painting, drawing, collage, photography, installation video and music production. The themes in his work have ranged from various aspects of his personal experience - including his psychological state – to some of the shared aspects of human existence like grief, religion and politics. Giancarlo is based in Gaborone, Botswana where he continues to hone his craft and work closely with his community.
