About The Artwork

Limited edition, one of five. 32x48 inch dye-infused metal photographic print with satin finish, mounted on floating frame, ready for hanging. Signed on back. Certificate of authenticity inclluded. These aerial views of San Francisco Bay and its tributaries are from altitudes of 500 to 5,000 feet. Viewed from above, there is great beauty in the abstract shapes seen below. I grew up in this area, sailed on the bay, and fished in its tributaries, but I took for granted the wonder that is this great work of nature. By 1961 the Bay had lost 1/3 of its size to commercial and industrial interests. 90% of the tidal marshlands were filled in, sealed off from tidal flow, or converted to salt ponds. However, since the early 1960’s the Bay has been one of the focal points of the environmental movement, and, today, a project is underway to restore 15,000 acres of wetlands. For thirteen years I have photographed the bay, its tidelands, salt ponds, and tributaries, both to capture its wonder and to expose man’s changes to it. My select portfolio now numbers over 95 images. I am continuing to record the bay’s ever-changing nature, hoping to see it make a positive transformation.

Images that arouse the mind, transform the ordinary, make one wonder, make one think. Uncommon beauty in the common world. This is what I look for in the interplay of light, shadow, and shape. And, it is what I strive to create in a photograph. I owe a debt of gratitude to those who have trusted me to photograph their creations and treasures, and for the paths their projects have helped me to find. For me, photography is an ongoing process of learning and creation, a process that never ends. Colin McRae began as a photographer of musicians for music labels and publications, later moving on to serve as the photographer for the Art Museum of the University of California at Berkeley, and eventually enjoying a long career as a freelance photographer. Currently, his work is devoted to aerial, landscape, and architectural photography with exhibits featuring his aerial and landscape work. His photographs have appeared in numerous books on art and architecture, both in the United States and abroad.
