About The Artwork

Rick Brodey is an admirer of the flora, fauna and insects of Southern California where he lives. He becomes animated when he talks about the architectural qualities of all of them, how shapes and lines make up their skeletons, how spectrums of color, light and shadow complete their stories leaving you with one of a kind characters. If you ask Rick for an explanation behind his work he’ll tell you there’s no heavy lifting that asking you to break a sweat looking for an answer. He’ll tell you to not make it complicated that the art itself is nature. Rick urges you to give yourself a long leash and allow yourself to meander thru the image noting the differences between what you think you know and what you see in front of you. There isn’t a solid story he’ll try and sell you, there’s isn’t one of those convoluted formulas or esoteric theories behind his work. He can tell you that his “work” begins only when something resonates with him. Only then will he shoot from some untraditional angles, hoping to capture at least one image to build off of. Rick takes the familiar, judiciously and thoughtfully picks at it, massaging the pieces to his satisfaction (which he may never completely achieve) and finally he lets them settle back into something new. Rick’s gratitude and love for the natural world keeps him from disrespecting those things he's been gifted with by “modernizing” or abstracting them. He’s sure to tell you that is only his opinion. His work offers him the opportunity to take a breath and step away from the heaviness of a currently fucked up world that’s determined to destroy the things he cherishes most. You can see a nod to that world in many of his works. His goal is to wipe away some of the chaos and uncertainties, some of the murkiness of life and leave you with the hope of possibility. Rick acknowledges and gives thanks for the powerful influence and motivation of his mentor Jim Scott, the unconditional love of his wife Shae and the brilliance of past masters such as Richter, Diebenkorn, John Singer Sargent, Thomas Eakins and Johannes Vermeer, all powerful visionaries whose styles inspire his creativity and his resolution to carry. With his tool box of untraditional methods and slightly broken thinking he creates his own vision of the natural world. Rick has a beautiful wife, 3 achieving kids and 2 hilarious dogs. Shakespeare, in The Winters Tale says it pretty well; "...this is an art Which does mend nature, change it rather, but The art itself is nature” Best, Brodey Print size + 1.5” white border all around Print is unframed Printed on: Epson Premium Semi-matte Archival paper Weight: 258 gsm Thickness: 10.7 mil ISO Brightness: 94% Opacity: 96% Surface: Semi-matte (low gloss) If you have any questions or requests please contact me at rickbrodey@yahoo.com Note: Due to the variances in monitor calibrations the colors of a print may not be an exact match to what the buyer sees on their screen. Although I’ve made adjustments to help compensate for any color shifts there are just too many variables on the buyers side for me to insure/promise an exact match. That being said they’re still beautiful! But in the unlikely event you’re less than 100% pleased you have my word that I’ll do whatever I can to make sure you’re a satisfied customer. This is a fine art photographic print, professionally hand printed on archival semi-matte paper using archival pigment ink, supervised and signed by the artist.
