In 2012, the Brooklyn Bridge began a long overdue facelift; its 5,989 ft. span was scraped to it’s metal core, and then painted. The tarps that covered the bridge transformed it into something Christo could have imagined; covered, cocooned, and shrouded, the span turned into a beautiful combination...

One of the most distinctive characteristics of s.m.dyer’s photography is the painterly quality she achieves. She interprets common objects and scenes, and in certain cases, protects the subjects identity, yet elevates the images to otherworldly planes and moody atmospheres.  She enjoys adding herself, so she paints or inks the images by hand. Self taught, she draws inspiration from her favorite artists, Van Gogh, Matisse and Picasso, using them as guides and challenges in her own work. Years ago s.m. dyer was intrigued by the painter’s tarps that covered the Brooklyn Bridge. Each day she found herself waiting for the sun so she could make images of layers. The graffiti covered tarp rustled in the breeze - in the background, a bustling city sat at the ready, waiting for the sun to illuminate the structure, and thus creating shadows. It was an incredible learning experience for her, making pictures that are so unique and that will never be seen again. This was also a gateway. She loved the idea of shrouded images, and through a lifetime of studying the master painters, her quest is to re-imagine photography. Her next adventure was to create motion, and as it were, she also created odd looks from passersby! Composed moving shots in intense sun made frames that danced around her lens; images the mind’s eye seems to recall. That grew into abstraction. She asked, is it possible to make pictures of subjects that no one knows are there? Working hard, she created a series called Photographic Abstraction, which is currently on display in NYC. s.m.dyer has had images on the set of the film Train Wreck (2015, Universal Studios), the NBC television show, American Odyssey, and currently, on the set of HBO’s Succession. Her street series hangs in Haddad celebrity campers, where a well-known actress procured a few of her pieces! She was written up in L’Oeil de la Photographie, Portfolio. Other pieces can also be found in restaurants, offices and homes. She’s been in several group shows, and a solo show at Fabio Scalia Brooklyn Heights (2015-2016). Her current solo show, Photographic Abstraction can be viewed at Fabio Scalia Soho, 311 W. B’way, NYC.
