ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Vietnam. I took this photo in a temple with deep red walls. This image speaks of centuries and rituals, devotees, and beliefs. To me, despite the country's complex history and layers of time, coming upon the worn and warm elegance of these simple altar candles stopped me into silent stillness. An altar, two flames, chipped paint and whispered prayers. It is said there are 17,000 temples and religious buildings in Vietnam. While living and traveling there for three months, the temples and shrines constantly called to me. The temple of this image was in Saigon - Ho Chi Min city - and had beautiful purple-blue patinas and deep resonating reds.
