2008, Ping Shan, China. Photographie. Pigment print. 60cm x 40cm, ed. 9. The San Qing–Three Pure Ones were the supreme Taoist deities occupying the highest three celestial realms of Jade Purity, Highest Purity, and Great Purity. Each of the Three Pure Ones represents both a deity and a heaven. By the 'golden age' of the Song Dynasty in China (960-1276) following the Tang Dynasty, the Three Pure Ones had come to represent the three divine natures of all living beings: past, present and future. Each is not a ruler but rather seeks to save mankind by teaching and benevolence. The first and highest of these heavens is Yu Qing, the Heaven of Jade Purity and it is found in the Jade Mountain. The entrance to this heaven is named the Golden Door. Yu Qing is inhabited by Yuan Shi Tian Zun–Jade Purity, who is the source of all truth. Ling Bao Tian Zun–Spiritual Treasure Honoured by Heaven occupies the second heaven Shang Qing, the Heaven of Great Purity. Ling Bao Tian Zun is the custodian of the sacred books and has existed from the beginning of the world. Tai Shang Lao Jun–Grand Pure One lives in the third heaven of Tai Qing, the Heaven of the Highest Purity. Tai Shang Lao Jun is in charge of Immortals and leads the way to 'The Way'.
