The factory was closed. On the island of Grenada in the Caribbean. When I walked into the main building where the mace is removed from the nutmeg, the lone woman was there, wearing her Sunday dress and working the nutmeg. Her hands were calloused and worn, but still agile. The efficiency of a lifetime of doing this was mesmerizing. There was a sad elegance and solid dignity in her. I was torn making this image. It felt exploitative and necessary at the same time. A way of life unchanged for a hundred years. A woman earning a little extra money on a Sunday afternoon, doing the only job she knew. The images would not have been made, except when I moved to leave after watching her for a lingering moment she asked me to take her photo. She has the only other copy.
