I studied the architecture of post apartheid Johannesburg. I looked for concrete structures that told a story. This is "Armscor" an old testing site for military vehicles. I work with a large format 4x5 field camera. I opted for this particular photographic technique to allow for maximum enlargement of the prints while maintaining an authentic analogue aesthetic. I shoot mostly on a Linhof 4x5 plate camera. In the era of "fast" I have reverted back to "slow" photography. “Illegal Mining”is a series I exhibited at the ABC gallery in Woodstock in 2021. This body of work was accepted into the top 50 of Photolucida’s Critical Mass. Last year this work was included in "Collide," a group show at Featherstone centre for arts, Martha’s vineyard, Massachusetts. "Double Exposure" delves into the exploration of abandoned mining site concrete structures. Venturing to various locations in and around Johannesburg, I captured these imposing edifices using a large format camera. I opted for this particular photographic technique to allow for maximum enlargement of the prints while maintaining an authentic analogue aesthetic. The unexpected double exposure effect emerged naturally as I reviewed the images on a lightbox, where the negatives serendipitously overlapped. While this isn't a traditional "double exposure" achieved in-camera, it's a post-processing technique using Photoshop. The 4x5 negatives are scanned and transformed from analogue to digital, yet the inherent film-like quality remains intact. Each image is printed on Hahnemule Photo Rag, 130cm x 110cm. The series consists of an edition of 7 prints and 2 artist proofs.
