About The Artwork
In 2002 I was assigned to photograph a female boxer who was also a lawyer. She climbed into the ring with her hair in brads and hands taped. She was focused and ready to pummel her opponent. She danced around the ring for 2 rounds then in the third the boxer shuffled back on step leaned left then right and jabbed. I shot the original source image when she shuffled back just before she pounced with a quick right that bloodied her opponents nose. Taking the original photo I remade it by hand creating this limited edition artwork. This artwork is printed using an archival Giclée process on rag photo paper. It is printed in a limited edition of 20. --- En 2002 me asignaron fotografiar a una boxeadora que también era abogada. Se subió al ring con el cabello trenzado y las manos cintadas. Estaba concentrada y lista para golpear a su oponente. Ella bailó alrededor del ring durante 2 rondas, luego en la tercera ronda. la boxeadora retrocedió arrastrando los pies, se inclinó hacia la izquierda y luego hacia la derecha y golpeó. Hello, my name is Matthew Bowler. This is where I toot my own horn, so here goes. I am an Emmy award winning journalist in San Diego, California. I come from a long line of journalists but I do not have traditional broadcast beginnings. In college I studied art with a specialty in painting and printmaking. In my last year of college I got married and a year later moved to the South of France. While there, I participated in art exhibitions and was even written about in “La Marseillaise” weekly newspaper, in which they called my alternative process photography “les oeuvres impossible”, or “the impossible works”. After my year in Provence, I returned to San Diego and began to work as a freelance photographer. At that time most of my work was editorial photojournalism for newspapers and magazines. Some years later I transitioned into television news where I started as a video editor. I soon began working as a videographer. But I never lost my love for still photography.
