About The Artwork

Fashion photographer Tomas Vandecasteele (*1972) goes beyond the conventional boundaries of contemporary photography with his expo “Sharpness is a bourgeois concept”. On large format prints Tomas unveils its reality, away from digital manipulation, technical effects and sharpness that typify the modern age of photography. In Vandecasteele’s work the essence cannot be found in the sharp detail. Take a distance from the image and listen to the story that, influenced by natural light and the dimension of time, seems to be confided to canvas in brushstrokes. It is no coincidence that the artist makes use of backdrops painted by himself, which clarifies his reference to the art of painting. The photographer clearly finds creative inspiration in Alberto Giacometti, Gerhard Richter, Bill Viola and Henri Cartier-Bresson. ‘Sharpness is a bourgeois concept’ is a quote from Henri Cartier-Bresson which dates from the times when photography, thanks to the arrival of the smaller mobile camera, disengaged from staged salon photography.
