My color photography takes two directions: fine art and documentary. The fine art offers a soft-focus, impressionist view of landscapes and seascapes that arose from my documentary work of 25 years along U.S. Highway 1 from Key West, Florida to the Canadian border at Fort Kent, Maine. The project, entitled, U.S. 1: Again for the First Time, details life styles and scenes in the 14 states that line the oldest, longest north-to-south highway in the United States. The current documentary project under consideration is a study of Cuba. My favorite scenarios are coastal areas where color and open space rule the compositions. The work makes strong use of color and insightful compositions to deliver a compelling image for the viewer to enjoy and, more importantly, relate to. All work was shot under existing light conditions without any digital enhancement. The lighting I find compelling for my work occurs from late afternoon to dark when the light is softer than at any other time of day. Background: Worked in newspapers post-grad until 1975 when I began free lancing for water sports magazines in the 80s. It was during this period that I first began the U.S. 1 documentary. Took on advertising and fashion assignments from 1990 to 2004. Ended the commercial work to concentrate on fine art.
