ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This piece explores an alternate and provocative version of an iconic moment in the story: The Red Queen demands a piglet to rest her feet on, a scene that captures the capricious and ruthless nature of the monarch. However, in this reinterpretation, the piglet takes on an erotic dimension, challenging conventions and exploring the power of submission as a form of pleasure. It creates an image that transcends the original innocence of the character and deviates from the traditional narrative to explore darker and more exciting territories, prompting reflection on the complex nature of desires and power dynamics. The provocation in this work lies not only in the transgression of the conventional but in the liberating expression of sexuality through consent and surrender. The piglet, far from being a passive figure, emerges as a being willing to fully embrace its role, defying expectations and celebrating the diversity of sexual expressions. It is essential to reflect on the apparent power that the Red Queen exerts over the piglet. This power would not be possible without the explicit and empowered consent granted by the piglet. This reflection goes beyond mere aesthetic exploration and urges us to question seemingly unequal power structures, reminding us that, in the authentic expression of submission, power emanates from the conscious act of giving consent, and true strength lies in mutual choice and shared respect.

Carlos Henaine was born in 1971 in Puebla, Mexico, and holds a degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the Universidad de las Américas, Puebla. His self-taught training as a designer led him to establish EXPLORARE, a design studio that began its activities in 1997, coinciding with the internet boom. In its early days, the studio focused on multimedia design and web development. From the year 2002 onwards, he decided to expand the studio's activities to meet the demands of visual communication, including corporate identity, editorial design, packaging, and environmental design. In 2008 and 2011, he was honored with the Quórum Award and has won a silver mention, three bronze mentions and a total of ten finalist works in that contest. In 2009, the INBA awarded him an honorary mention in the Fifth National Design Biennial. Between 2007 and 2015, he won seven first places in the a! Diseño Awards. In 2012, he was selected to be part of the first Mexican Design Directory 2012, co-edited by Centro and ProMéxico. In 2014, he was invited to participate as a judge in the a! Diseño Awards. In 2016, he received an honorary mention in the first edition of the Diseña México Award. To date, his work has been published in nine books by HOW and Rockport Publishers, internationally recognized authorities in the field of graphic design. As a specialist in visual communication, he currently explores different paths in the expression of visual arts, using photography as a medium to create art. He portrays human reality through the rawest and most authentic emotions, capturing the interplay of darkness and light in people. As an emerging artist, he has participated in several group exhibitions and presented his first solo exhibition in 2023 at a renowned art gallery in his hometown.
