‘The Shape of You’ is a long exposure, underwater photograph made near the island of Formentera in the Mediterranean Sea. “Unable to perceive the shape of you, I find you all around me. Your presence fills my eyes with your love. It humbles my heart, for you are everywhere” The Shape of Water - Guillermo del Toro The poem above is narrated during the ending scene from my all time favourite movie. The Shape of Water is a story set during a time of division and oppression, telling a tale of love, humanity and compassion. There are many metaphors that can be seen in this movie, but for me the classic themes of good vs evil and the fight to protect something unique and exceptional is a strong representation of humankind’s relationship with planet earth. I made this image with this relationship and this poem in mind. Soft, blurry and intangible. A pairing that’s become disconnected. Like a fleeting memory that’s just out of reach This limited edition photograph is printed using archival inks on 100% cotton Hahnemuhle Photo Rag® Pearl fine art paper. Each edition is signed, numbered and sent with the corresponding certificate to guarantee authenticity. Lexi Laine is based in the UK and specialises in creating ethereal underwater photography in some of the most unique locations around the globe. She has spent several years training as a freediver in order to extend the amount of time she can stay underwater. Works responding to the human impact on the marine environment can be seen throughout the artist’s portfolio. Influences of 17th and 18th century baroque painting, fantasy and folklore can also often be found in her images. Laine enjoys explorations of surreal contradictions, blurring boundaries and using photography as a means to create otherworldly, emotive art. Laine studied BA Fine Art at UCA (University for the Creative Arts) Canterbury in 2001-2004 and since graduating has been building her career as a photographer and artist. In 2020 Laine was awarded the winner of the Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize Photography Award. In 2018 and 2019 she was awarded ‘Image of the Year’ by leading UK training provider, Photography Farm. Also in 2019 Laine was sponsored by Sony UK to create a short behind the scenes documentary of her practise titled 'Under The Surface'. The project was undertaken in the magical cenotes of the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico.
