Signed limited editions of some of my formative works. My key influences for these works are Giorgio Morandi, a painter of exquisite calm and subtlety in still life, and Cubism, which, by breaking perspective, suggests we should look at the objects in our lives in more than one way. Biographical statement Malcolm Leyland (born in Whiston, Lancashire, UK) lives and works in London and the southeast of England. As a London-based professional photographer, Malcolm specialised in still life advertising. He was commissioned by many well-known advertising and design agencies and publications. He built a reputation for an individual and stylised approach to representing visual messaging for many brands throughout the eighties and nineties. During this period, Malcolm developed an aesthetic and visual signature that stood apart from commercial influences or constraints. He never veered away from the principles of a private statement and a commitment he made to himself when at art school. Fully committed to the medium, he knew that photography had a vast, unexplored and unrealised creativity at that time. He wanted to move the medium of photography toward something new. Now, having abandoned commercial work entirely, Malcolm is committed solely to developing those early ideas, building on his aesthetic, and experimenting with the medium. Malcolm’s current work is a result of that.
