About The Artwork

Vita lying with some roses in my studio. The original photograph was made using the 19th century technique of Wet Plate collodion on my 8.5"x6.5" large format vintage camera. As a photographer for over 25 years my heart still lies in analogue processes and Wet Plate photography has always fascinated me. The tones and feeling of images made in this way are different from almost all other photographic mediums. Each plate must be coated, sensitised and then developed immediately after the exposure is made and no two plates will be the same due to the hand made nature of the process. There are often flaws in the final plate due to errors and inconsistencies in processing. For me, these just add to the unique feeling when viewing image. When a plate is finally ready, I digitise the finished image to make a large format print which I then "Face" with Acrylic to create a beautiful signature piece for the discerning collector.

Mike still works in both Black and White film to produce hand-made darkroom images and in Digital photography which is often used to crate Alternative prints such as Cyanotypes as well as fine art Giclee prints in Limited Editions.
