About This Image

Every Traveler Palm holds a striking secret.

Here, "Zabriske Point" suggests the convolutions, texture and endless color contrasts in the eroded rock along the Amargosa Range east of Death Valley. Zabriske Point is the spectacular focus of dried sediment from ancient Furnace Creek Lake.

Traveler leaves emerge from a central base; one stacked on top of the other, in flat, alternating order. When formed, the stalks are squeezed together in the base, causing one-of-a-kind scars as they push outward with growth. No two stalks are identical, and when photographed with a macro lens, their distinct markings form the basis for unique abstract images that open the door to finding other worlds. Some mimic swirling tableaus of painterly textures or color-streaked desert landscapes while still others suggest the flavor of old master canvases or the allegorical wood block prints of Hokusai.

About My Work

I have been fortunate to spend my life chasing light to tell stories and fill my creative soul. Today, I continue interpreting images using my signature visual stamp; reducing the subject down to its most essential and emotional qualities. Along with my editorial/documentary projects, I embraced a wide range of abstract works captured with the same perspective of the decisive moment; I am showing those images here for the first time.

Most of my abstracts use light, shadow, form and composition as one-of-a-kind transient combinations, with each element aligning to create the frame for only that moment before growth, decay and natural light move on to their next stages. My aim is for these images to suggest new secrets and fresh interpretations each time one is viewed.

I have been fortunate to spend my life chasing light to tell stories and fill my creative soul. Today, I continue interpreting images using my signature visual stamp; reducing the subject down to its most essential and emotional qualities. I began as a 19-year old photojournalist, travelling the Formula 1 circuit in the 1970s-80s, documenting the sport and its iconic racing drivers on black and white film. I searched for “decisive moments”, deliberately disappearing into the background as a “fly on the wall,” to reveal the essence of each subject’s heart and soul as they fought long ago to be the best in the world. The images now appear more contemporary as the years pass and have been featured in dozens of journals and these fine art prints are in private collections worldwide. The PALM BLU collection celebrates both familiarity and surprise. I use the palm's highlights and shadows to create precise graphic frames and then apply subtle light and color manipulation to suggest unrelenting heat, blinding sunlight or a cool evening breeze that transforms the bland into the seductive, the simple into the complex, and the natural into the mystical. HEAT uses infrared processing and exact positioning that visually transforms the relationship between each palm’s dense shadows and bright leaves into a graphic, creating the sense of dark mystery and intense emotion needed for large statement pieces. My TRAVELER collection employs macro photography of each palms’ one-of-a-kind artistic markings that reveal painterly abstract forms, color-streaked desert landscapes or the allegorical woodblock prints of Hokusai. Both my ABSTRACTS and FROM THE STREET collections celebrate the grandeur and wonder of pure found art in accidental forms before natural wear, or another human’s hand changes them forever.
