Victor Haim - more than impressions Don't let the surface of images take you in. It is so tempting a simplification, but it will deprive you of other senses. The images captured by Victor Haim reveal different apparitions and are of different origins and natures. What unites them is not just the photogaphic technique used, but also the forms and colors and the way the subjects are approached. They must be lingered over for the relationships to emerge. Our attention goes wherever our eyes rest. When Haim finds his images in the reflections of uneven surfaces (whether a car body, a coffee blot or some water), after looking for a specific yet not defined aspect in randomness, what he seeks is silence. Something apart from the outside world in a manmade shelter. Even when he chooses what should be reflected, there is no way of knowing how the surface will transform it. The only thing that can be controlled is the choice of angle and framing when the image is shot - which is where the artist's vision comes in. In this process, the world is redefined with distortions that belong to reality as perceived from each observer's particular viewpoint. There is an encounter with this silent universe which becomes evident to those who look at and see it. Countless images cry out before us every day and we decide where to rest our gaze. The artist reconstructs the world from the world itself, creating a new reality as he staunches the constantly shifting forms and colors that surround us through photography. New perspectives open up for the viewer, prompting them to reflect upon what lies beyond the suface apprearance. Reflections engender reflections; surfaces draw us inwards. Victor Haim observes his surroundings and picks out whatever strikes his senses. Without going unnoticed, these visual havens captured by his lenses are more than just records; they gently invade our sense of sight, touching us in many and profound ways. Allow yourself to be moved by the images. André Sheik - December 2011 visual artist and curator
