ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This work is signed and dated on the front. 'huginn (and muninn)' is part of a body of work titled 'Ebb and Flow' currently showing in the beautiful art space of Malcolm Smith Gallery in Auckland, New Zealand. It is a solo exhibition curated by Director Paul Brobbel. The exhibition will run until 16 November 2024. It all started by reading the book 'Pliny the Elder - Natural History: A Selection' and then developed from there. 'Ebb and Flow' considers a number of themes wrapped up into an overarching theme. The art is and has been inspired from some of the big philosophical ideas around imagination. Aristotle stated that ‘imagination’ is a process by which we say that an image is visualised or obtained by us: “that the soul never thinks without an image.” Descartes, influential in developing the scientific method: “a person must train their imagination to gain knowledge.” David Hume: “nothing that we imagine is absolutely impossible.” Kant: that we synthesise incoherent stimuli from our senses into images, thence to concepts via the imagination. Your imagination, like the ocean and river tides, ebbs and flows. The artworks revolve largely around water, whether as liquid, solid or gas. Most, although not all of the artworks are abstract. Art in the abstract drives individual imagination to its maximum. Abstract art will (or ought to) take you on your own individual journey of ideas or imagination.

Kristin Hatland is an exhibiting artist with a Bachelor of Applied Arts Visual. A component of her vision and motiviation is informed by her study of logic (cause and effect) while simultaneously applying a normative ethic. The blending of the two philosophical theories provides artistic tension, blurring idealistic expression, driving her fascination with abstract art. An award winning artist, she has exhibited at the Shutter Room in Whangarei as part of the group exhibition Metapherein, was part of the selection for The Exposure Award launched by the Louvre in Paris, and the bastille from her Plato’s Cave series was amongst the finalists and winners included in a tour of New Zealand’s museums and art galleries coordinated by the Wallace Arts Trust. Her artworks are held in collections in New Zealand and overseas
