About The Artwork

The most famous story in science is that of Sir Isaac Newton and the apple: it fell from a tree in his garden while he was reading and inspired the 'Theory of Gravity'. However, one big question remained: how is the force of gravity transmitted across space between the Sun and Earth? Sir Newton avoided the question by saying: "Hypotheses non fingo" or I don't deal in hypotheses. Max Planck demonstrated that the energy of light was not infinitely divisible. The smallest division being a 'quantum', hence, the birth of 'Quantum Mechanics'. In Newtonian mechanics, the orbits of electrons are deterministic. Not so in quantum mechanics, the orbits of objects are random or non-deterministic. They can only be estimated through probability theory. String theory replaces the particles by strings, which are in vibrational states and called gravitons. A graviton is a mechanical particle that carries a gravitational force: thus string theory is a theory of quantum gravity, which makes it a candidate for the theory of everything. Strings are 'Open' and 'Closed'. In the artwork you can see the following: open and closed and strings that show light across the spectrum, visible to the human eye. They link the sky and earth, extending deeper, but unseen, into the artwork, hidden from human sight and that of the camera. My artworks are predominantly predicated upon asking philosophical questions that illuminate the human condition. The science of physics, to which this artwork refers, is a restatement of the 'Brain in a Vat' question: how do we know what we know? Many things that we thought we knew, have proved false. Do we actually know anything at all?

Kristin Hatland is an exhibiting artist with a Bachelor of Applied Arts Visual. A component of her vision and motiviation is informed by her study of logic (cause and effect) while simultaneously applying a normative ethic. The blending of the two philosophical theories provides artistic tension, blurring idealistic expression, driving her fascination with abstract art. An award winning artist, she has exhibited at the Shutter Room in Whangarei as part of the group exhibition Metapherein, was part of the selection for The Exposure Award launched by the Louvre in Paris, and the bastille from her Plato’s Cave series was amongst the finalists and winners included in a tour of New Zealand’s museums and art galleries coordinated by the Wallace Arts Trust. Her artworks are held in collections in New Zealand and overseas
