We all love butterflies but most of us hate caterpillars and we’re not exactly fond of nettles. BUT if we don’t allow space for the nettles, there will be no caterpillars to transform into some of our best loved butterflies. The photo etching is created with my own drawings of butterflies that depend on nettles. But the number of butterflies to be seen is obscured by the absent shapes of nettles. These are formed by laying nettles over the photo etching plate before passing through the etching press. A little red ink was allowed to bleed around the absent nettles. I like to use top quality heavy weight paper (this one is Somerset 300gm cotton paper) so It is best not to roll up prints for posting, especially when the printing process results in a fair amount of embossing. I will therefore only ship my prints flat and protected with card. Never roll artwork on paper, it invariably causes damage. This artwork was conceived and created solely as an original fine art print. Unlike a gicleé print or any other computer print out, none of my prints are reproductions of a pre-existing painting or drawing.

Through my artwork I look to say something about the environment - explore how we interact, use, abuse and collaborate with the natural world around us. This has taken me to interact with specific sites such as a regenerated landfill site and increasingly to focus on the small ubiquitous and often reviled weeds and bugs that form the foundation and engine room of ecosystems. Much of my current practice involves ongoing studies of Devon Hedgerows. Devon has more hedgerows than any other county in the UK, supporting over 600 plant species, 1500 insects, 65 birds and 20 mammals. In addition to studying Devon hedgerows, I have also undertaken projects looking at the importance of urban bees; a celebration of our most rare farm bird being brought back from the brink of extinction; and ongoing observations of local weeds/wild flowers. I am a founder member of Double Elephant Print Workshop and a member of the Devon Guild of Craftsmen.
