About The Artwork

The artist's daughter, Elizabeth Hulings writes: "The hamlet of Escouderc, in South Central France, is three hours from anywhere. Escouderc is part of the slightly larger village of Saint Paul des Landes, which has a population of almost 2,000 people. My father thought it was just spectacular — a bonanza of subject matter. He spent many days exploring the area, and painted a lot of plein air sketches, as well as a few large studio compositions, of which this is one." When you look at this painting, you may be struck by the tranquility of the green. And then there's the textures of the grass and the terra cotta roof so beautifully contrasted with the smoothness of the winding road and the lone figure walking along it. Who is the man? Does he live in the ancient farmhouse, or is he passing it on his way home? What's down that road? Throughout, the ducks in the pond are doing what they do best: swimming, or considering swimming. Hulings would paint as much misty days as on clear ones; here you can see the play of subtle values in shades of green and orange that really deepen on a slightly overcast day. It's a pastoral and restful image, perfect to enjoy in a mindful moment. Printed on paper in limited editions and signed.

Clark Hulings (1922-2011) was born in Florida and raised in New Jersey. Over his lifetime, he resided in New York, Louisiana, and throughout Europe before settling in Santa Fe in 1972. Clark’s ability to see beauty in daily human gestures and activities won him the appellation “master” on numerous occasions. His celebration of textures as expressed through light, shadow, and atmosphere “describes the air itself,” according to the Christian Science Monitor. His range of subject matter was astonishing, “No one does as many things as well,” proclaimed Southwest Art. His modesty in the face of such acclaim was legendary. Throughout his career he maintained a personal profile far lower than his national reputation.
